What are statins?

Statins, also known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, are a class of lipid-lowering pharmaceuticals, and are among the most widely prescribed class of drugs. Statins have been found to reduce cardiovascular disease and mortality in those who are at high risk, but also are associated with unwanted side effects.

The problems with statins

Side effects of statins include muscle pain, increased risk of diabetes mellitus, and abnormalities in liver enzyme tests. Other possible adverse effects include cognitive loss, neuropathy, pancreatic and hepatic dysfunction, and sexual dysfunction. In observational studies 10-15% of people who take statins experience muscle problems; in most cases these consist of muscle pain. Statins are also associated with a slightly increased risk of diabetes (2-17% in one review.)

Statin+ Concept

The Statin+ concept combines a specific cannabinoid small molecule to existing statin drugs. This combination has the synergistic effects of improved lipid lowering, reduction of arterial plaque, and dramatically reduction of side-effects.
